This article is about how Louis Taylor was convicted of suspicion for setting fire to a hotel that lead to 29 deaths.Back when the trial was first held, there was not much evidence showing that Taylor committed the crime, but he was nonetheless found guilty and was sent to jail at age 16. The case was picked up again decades later and through this whole time Taylor stood by that he wasn't guilty. Finally, he plead for a lesser charge, and was released at age 53.
Taylor's struggle is one against "justice". He has repeatedly plead not guilty for 37 years. Being put in jail for so long must have been horrible if he is innocent. It reminds me of how the man, Zeitoun was put in prison after the hurricane. Through the book, Zeitoun, it showed how much stress he went through for being wrongfully treated as a criminal although he didn't do anything wrong. Imagine being treated that way for decades?
THAT'S INSANE! 37 years... I see your Zeitoun connection and I agree, the same type of situation applies. The government, police, courts etc etc are always meant to help our society but it seems innocent people are convicted far too often for them to be as helpful as they claim.
ReplyDeleteThat's just terrible. They didn't have proof that the man was the one who set the hotel on fire. It's just like Zeitoun. The both of them didn't do anything wrong and they were accused of something they didn't do. I'm surprised this case wasn't solved earlier. What were people doing for the past 37 years?
ReplyDeleteI read this article somewhere and he was saying how he felt that he was found guilty just because he was black and the people who accused him were white. However, this is absolutely unacceptable and it makes me so mad. I can't imagine how it feels to be in jail for something that you did not do, especially being in jail for almost your entire life. I'm happy for him to finally be free, but it would've helped if people let him go 30 years earlier...
ReplyDeleteI find it crazy that someone can spend practically their whole life in jail for something that they didn't do. It must be so emotionally and mentally damaging spending that much time in prison especially knowing that you did not commit the crime. This is definitely something that had to change about the judicial system.
ReplyDeleteHow terrible it must be, not just for him but also for his loved ones. In Zeitoun, the effects of one wrongdoing greatly affected his whole family, but one can only hope here they can learn to cope better. What made them even think he did it, seriously? At 16? They ruined his whole life...
